On September 1, 2025, as a result of heavy rains and storms, New York and New Jersey declared a state of emergency. Torrential downpours flooded streets, disrupted transportation, creating serious problems for residents and travelers.
The government recommended avoiding travel unless absolutely necessary, as forecasts predicted additional rainfall. New York Governor Kathy Hochul urged residents to stay home if possible and avoid flooded roads, as it was expected that rain could persist for 3 days. Many flights at New York airports, LaGuardia and JFK, were canceled or delayed.
As a result of the disaster, one person died in Maryland, where a child fell into a flooded canal. Nearly 50 rescuers attempted to save the child, but she was pronounced dead at the scene of the incident.
In New York City, flooded subway stations, including the 7th Avenue station in Brooklyn, where passengers tried to escape the water that flooded the station. Video, shared on social media, showed how people were dealing with the flooded areas.
New York Mayor Eric Adams also announced the localized state of emergency, advising residents to stay indoors if possible, and to avoid travel through flooded roads. Some subway lines, including the G train to Washington, were suspended due to flooding.
As of early September 2, emergency services were working on draining water from flooded areas to ensure normal functioning of the transportation system in the city.
