Smithsonian Releases References to Trump's Impeachments

  • The Smithsonian has included references to Trump's impeachments in its exhibition.
  • President Trump is the first U.S. president to be impeached twice.
  • The museum plans to update the exhibition to include all instances of impeachment.

The Smithsonian National Museum of American History has included references to the impeachments of President Donald Trump in its exhibition on American presidency. This decision was made following a review of the museum's content, conducted in 2025.

Trump is the only president in U.S. history to have been impeached twice. The first impeachment occurred in 2019 over allegations of abuse of power and obstruction of Congress, while the second was in 2021 over incitement of insurrection during the Capitol riot. Both times, Trump was acquitted by the Senate.

In early 2021, the museum added a temporary display that mentioned Trump's impeachments, but with the understanding that in July 2025, it would be removed. Currently, the exhibition features information dated 2008, which only mentions the impeachments of Presidents Andrew Johnson, Bill Clinton, and Richard Nixon.

Smithsonian stated that in the future updated exhibition, all instances of impeachment will be taken into account. Previously, Trump also sought to influence cultural institutions, including the removal of "unflattering" and "anti-American" depictions from museum content.
