France Warns of Threat from Russia by 2030

General Thierry Burkard, head of the French Armed Forces General Staff, expressed in an interview with The Economist that Russia could become a "real threat" to Europe over the next five years. He noted that the country is rapidly increasing its military potential, which could allow it to once again become a military threat to Western countries.

Burkard emphasized that Russia's combat experience, its scale, and resilience make it a significant concern. He believes that in a conflict, Russians will be able to endure "for five waves longer" than others. The general also pointed out that, regardless of the potential reduction in the presence of American troops in Europe, they will not leave the continent.

In light of the increasing threat from Russia, Burkard expressed hope for the development of relations between France, the United Kingdom, and Germany, which could become the foundation for a "European pillar of NATO." He also referred to the need for enhanced military methods, including the use of high-technology weapons, such as the SCALP cruise missile.

Moreover, Burkard stressed the importance of changing tactics in conducting warfare. According to him, all armies need to effectively integrate unmanned lethal systems on land, in the air, and at sea.

He also noted that if France is indeed under threat from Russia, "this is not a question of usual forces, but a question of nuclear deterrence."

The French President Emmanuel Macron recently called for significant increases in defense spending, particularly due to the threat from Russia.
