Tribute to Graham Thorpe: Players and Fans Gathered
- Players of the England team honored the memory of Thorpe by wearing caps with his name on them.
- Funds raised from the sale of the caps will go towards supporting mental health initiatives.
- The "Oval" stadium held an event on the day of Thorpe's birthday.
Players of the England team, with a cricket bat in hand, wore caps with his name on them in memory of Graham Thorpe, honoring the veteran who played 100 tests. Thorpe, one of the most beloved batters of his generation and assistant coach of England until 2021, passed away in September of last year after a prolonged battle with illness and depression.
The second day of the fifth test against India was to be the 56th birthday of Thorpe, and as the match progressed at his home ground, "Surrey" celebrated "Thorpe Day". Caps, similar to those worn by him during his career, featuring his initials and image, were sold for £5 to raise funds for the charity "Mind", and the entire England team wore them during the warm-up.
Many players, including Joe Root and former captain Ben Stokes, had close relationships with Thorpe during his coaching career. Stokes noted that Thorpe had a significant influence on English cricket. This will be a special day for all English fans, as they remember how much he meant to English cricket.
The "Oval" stadium also paid tribute to Thorpe, where they sold a limited number of caps to raise funds for the charity "Mind". Funds collected during the event will go towards the initiative "Thorpey's Bat and Chat", which promotes cricketing activities while addressing mental health issues.
