Microsoft Ends Support for Windows 11 SE for Educational Institutions

  • Support for Windows 11 SE will end in June 2026.
  • This version of the OS was created for educational institutions.
  • Microsoft recommends switching to other versions of Windows 11.

This was reported by Ars Technica, The Verge.

Microsoft announced the end of support for Windows 11 SE, a specialized version of the operating system designed to compete with ChromeOS in educational institutions. This information appeared in an updated support article, which noted that there would be no updates for Windows 11 SE, and support will end in June 2026.

Windows 11 SE, launched in 2021, was only available on devices intended for educational use. Microsoft calculated that this version would not lead schools to switch to ChromeOS. The software for Windows 11 SE was limited to only certain extensions, and IT administrators had to control which programs could be installed.

Previously, Microsoft attempted to compete with ChromeOS through various versions of Windows, including Windows 10 S and S Mode, but these efforts did not achieve the desired success. Windows 11 SE, in turn, utilized an approach that encourages the use of progressive web apps (PWAs), which also did not gain popularity among users.

On this day, the company recommends transitioning to other versions of Windows 11 to receive necessary support and updates. Windows 11 SE was available on a limited number of devices, including the Surface Laptop SE, which cost $249.
