The Term Limit Repeal by the Presidency in El Salvador Sparks Controversy

  • The constitutional reform in El Salvador allows for the unlimited re-election of the president.
  • The opposition warns of a threat of authoritarianism in the country.
  • Support for Bukele has increased due to reduced crime rates.

On September 1, 2025, the legislative assembly of El Salvador approved a constitutional reform that allows for unlimited re-election of the president. A total of 57 deputies voted for the reform, while 3 opposed it. This change also extends the term limit for the president from five to six years, making the next election cycle a second round of voting.

Opposition leaders and activists have expressed concerns that this reform leads the country towards authoritarianism, drawing parallels with the situation in Venezuela. Congresswoman Marcela Villatoro stated that "democracy in El Salvador is at risk." She emphasized that the concentration of power in the hands of a single leader threatens democratic values.

Supporters of President Nayib Bukele, who has been praised for his tough stance against crime, view these changes positively. They argue that the reform will simplify the electoral process and reduce election costs. Bukele, who was first elected in 2019, has received support due to the decreased crime rate in the country.

However, international observers and human rights advocates warn of the risks, stating that unlimited re-election could lead to a concentration of power and the dismantling of democratic institutions. A similar situation occurred with the referendum in Venezuela in 2009, which resulted in the authoritarian rule of Nicolás Maduro.

At that time, while Bukele asserts that he does not plan to run in the upcoming elections, many believe that he is not adhering to his promises.
