Justin Timberlake, the famous American singer, announced his diagnosis of Lyme disease via a post on Instagram on July 31, 2025. He noted that he will be battling this disease for several years. Lyme disease is an infectious disease that is transmitted through tick bites.
According to data from the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC), approximately 500,000 cases of Lyme disease are reported in the USA each year. The disease is most commonly contracted in the spring and summer months when tick activity is at its highest.
What is Lyme disease?
Lyme disease is caused by the bacterium Borrelia burgdorferi and is transmitted through the bites of ticks that become carriers after feeding on small mammals or certain species of birds. The incubation period lasts from 1 to 45 days, usually 1-2 weeks.
Symptoms of Lyme disease
Symptoms can appear as early as three days after a tick bite. The most common symptoms include fatigue, headaches, and fever. A characteristic "bull's-eye" rash may also appear - a red spot with a central clearing that expands. In later stages, serious problems may arise, such as heart inflammation, neurological disorders, and arthritis.
Diagnosis and treatment
Diagnosis of Lyme disease is made using FDA-approved antibody tests. Treatment usually involves antibiotics for 10-14 days. If the disease is not treated, serious complications may arise, including paralysis and arthritis.
Prevention of Lyme disease
The CDC recommends wearing repellent, checking clothing and skin after spending time outdoors. It is important to remove ticks within 24 hours to significantly reduce the risk of infection. In the case of a tick bite, it is advisable to grasp it by the head to remove it.
