Thirty States File Lawsuit Against Trump Administration
- States filed a lawsuit against the Trump administration over access to medical services for transgender youth.
- Many doctors have stopped providing gender-affirming care due to the threat of losing funding.
- The Trump administration's actions increase the risk to the mental health of transgender youth.
Thirty states filed a lawsuit against the Trump administration, seeking to protect access to medical services for transgender youth. The lawsuit was announced on September 1, 2025, and is led by the attorneys general of California, New York, Massachusetts, Illinois, and Connecticut.
In response to the lawsuit, the Trump administration aims to restrict access to essential medical services, such as puberty blockers and hormone therapy, which are recognized as "medically necessary treatments." These services, which are the standard of medical care, have recently come under threat due to pressure from the federal government.
Many doctors, including pediatricians in Los Angeles, have closed their centers from providing gender-affirming care, fearing the loss of federal funding. Other facilities, such as pediatric clinics in Washington and the University of Chicago, have also limited their services due to political pressure.
Attorneys general assert that the Trump administration's actions violate federal laws, as they involve a national law that prohibits denying medical services to transgender youth. The plaintiffs also emphasize that refusal to provide medical care could worsen the mental health of youth.
The lawsuit is accompanied by legislative initiatives in 28 states, where restrictive laws regarding medical care for transgender youth have been enacted. However, in states with liberal laws, such as California, protections for access to such services continue to be enforced.
Democratic lawmakers argue that the Trump administration is conducting a campaign to undermine the rights of doctors and medical institutions that provide legally, essential care to children.
