Washington (AP) — President Donald Trump on Friday called for the dismissal of the head of the Bureau of Labor Statistics after a report showed that hiring slowed in July and was significantly lower than previously reported for June and May.
Trump stated on his social media platform that the numbers were "falsified" for political reasons and said that Eric Makentfer, the director of the Bureau of Labor Statistics, appointed by former President Joe Biden, should be dismissed.
"I instructed my team to dismiss this political appointee of Biden, NEGAINE," Trump wrote.
The report for Friday indicates that only 73,000 jobs were added in July, and that 258,000 fewer jobs were created in June and May than previously estimated.
Trump stated that accurate data on job creation is needed and added that Makentfer "falsified" data on employment in previous monthly reports.
Makentfer was confirmed by the Senate in March 2024 with 86 votes "for" and 8 "against." He has worked at the federal level for over 20 years.
The Bureau of Labor Statistics regularly reviews economic data, such as the report on employment, through delays in data collection.
This situation continues to raise questions about the accuracy of economic indicators in the USA.
