Goalkeeper Matt Turner Returns to New England Revolution on Loan
- Turner returns to New England Revolution on loan from Lyon.
- The loan lasts until June 2026 with the possibility of a purchase.
- Lyon faced financial difficulties that impacted the club.
The New England Revolution announced the return of national team goalkeeper Matt Turner on loan from Lyon. This agreement includes the option to purchase the player, which became known on September 1, 2025.
Turner, who was the main goalkeeper at the World Cup 2022, will occupy a spot on the team under the conditions of a designated player until the end of 2025. After the loan period, which lasts until June 2026, the club plans to convert him into a category of players with targeted allocation money. To purchase Turner, the club will need to offer a price significantly lower than €8 million, which Lyon paid Nottingham Forest for his transfer in January 2023.
Turner expressed satisfaction about returning to the club where he started his career, noting that this is a special moment for him and his family. He emphasized that he is ready to work on his return to the field and help the team achieve its goals.
Lyon, Turner's parent club, faced financial difficulties that led to administrative relegation in League 2, but the club successfully appealed this decision. Last season, Lyon placed their Brazilian goalkeeper Lucas Perrin, who transferred to Leeds United.
Turner previously played for New England Revolution for seven seasons, establishing himself as one of the best goalkeepers in the league. After moving to Arsenal in 2022, he rarely left the field, which led to his loss of place in the main squad of the US national team for the Gold Cup 2025.
The head coach of New England Revolution, Kaleb Porter, expressed joy at the return of Turner, noting that his high standards and experience will be an important addition to the team.
