- The case began in 2018 and it triggered a wide resonance.
- The defense plans to appeal the ruling in the Supreme Court.
Former Colombian president Álvaro Uribe received 12 years of house arrest, which has become a significant event in the history of the country. Judge Sandra Hernández announced the ruling, declaring Uribe guilty of witness tampering and procedural fraud, which became the result of a prolonged judicial case.
Uribe, who held the presidential office from 2002 to 2010, previously supported harsh measures against narcotraffickers and FARC guerrillas. Despite criticism, he remains popular among a significant part of the population. Following the announcement of the ruling, his supporters gathered outside the court, expressing their support.
The case against Uribe began in 2018, and during this time, many prosecutors and lawyers involved have changed. It is expected that the defense will submit an appeal to the court's decision, and the case will be transferred to the High Court of Bogota, which must make a decision by mid-July.
Some politicians in Colombia, as well as representatives of the USA, have stated that the ruling is politically motivated. Uribe asserts that he is being persecuted for political reasons.
