Approval of the agreement for the Washington Commanders stadium

  • The Washington City Council approved the agreement for a new stadium for the Washington Commanders.
  • The project involves an investment of $2.7 billion from the team and $1.1 billion from the city.
  • The territory of the new stadium is planned to accommodate 6,000 housing units by 2040.

Washington, D.C. — On September 1, 2025, the Washington City Council granted preliminary approval of the agreement regarding the construction of a new stadium for the Washington Commanders. This decision is seen as an important step in the realization of the project with a total value of $3.8 billion, which includes significant construction on the territory of the former RFK stadium.

The stadium is designed for 65,000 spectators, and the team will allocate $2.7 billion for its construction. The city is expected to allocate $1.1 billion for the project, which will also involve the creation of new entertainment venues, restaurants, and hotels. It is known that by 2040, 6,000 housing units will be built in this territory, of which 30% will be designated for low-income residents.

The voting took place with a result of 9-3. Additional voting will take place on February 17 after the summer recess of the council. If the agreement is also approved, the team hopes to open the new stadium by the beginning of the 2030 season.

This project will become the first instance when all four major professional teams in the U.S. play in the city simultaneously. Mayor of Washington, Muriel Bowser, actively supports the return of the team to the city, noting that the agreement will bring the city $4 billion in tax revenue over the next 30 years.

In addition, the new stadium promotes the possibility of hosting major events, including the Super Bowl and NCAA finals. The development also includes ecological aspects, such as the preservation of green zones.
