  • OpenAI stated that the function allowing ChatGPT chats to be indexed in Google has been removed.
  • Thousands of private conversations were discovered in search results.
  • The company has begun removing indexed content from search engines.

This is reported by Ars Technica, Engadget.

OpenAI stated that the function allowing ChatGPT users to share conversations that appeared in Google search results has been removed. This decision was a response to increasing concerns from users, particularly as private chats were inadvertently accessible through the search engine.

According to information published in Fast Company, thousands of ChatGPT conversations were found in Google search results. Although these chats did not contain personal information, some of them had details that could potentially identify individual users.

The function that triggered the indexing allowed users to designate chats as "available for search." After clicking the "Share" button, users had the option to select a setting that allowed their chats to appear in search results. However, this option may have been misinterpreted due to the way the text was formatted.

The head of OpenAI's information security, Dain Stukey, explained that the company decided to disable this function, as it created the possibility for accidental exposure of users' personal information. OpenAI has also started the process of removing indexed content from search engines.

Experts in AI ethics, such as Karissa Bell, have expressed concerns regarding how technology companies test new features on users without informing them of potential consequences.

OpenAI confirmed that security and confidentiality are priorities for the company, and it will continue to work on these aspects in its products.
