- Problems with access to medical assistance and legal services are causing outrage.
At the immigration center known as Aligator Alcatraz in Florida, detainees continue their hunger strike, which has lasted for ten days. They are protesting against conditions they deem inhumane and unsafe.
One of the detainees is Pedro Lorenzo Concepcion, who began the hunger strike on July 22, following his arrest on July 8. He reported that during the hunger strike he has lost consciousness several times and has refused medication in the hospital.
Another detainee, Pedro Hernandez, has also refused food, stating that he will not eat until they pay attention to them. His friend expresses concern about his health and the possibility of deportation to Cuba without him and the children.
The facility, located in Everglades, has serious shortcomings in conditions, including insufficient food and lack of medical assistance. According to reports, detainees receive meals only once a day, and they are often insufficient.
Community activists and lawyers also express concern, indicating that detainees do not have access to legal assistance. In response to these issues, an extrajudicial hearing was held in the surrounding area of Cocontat-Grove, demanding reforms.
Florida officials have already announced the beginning of deportation flights for detainees, which has led to even greater concern among their relatives.
