Washington (AP) — The head of the Bureau of Labor Statistics (BLS), Erica Makentarfir, has been dismissed from her position on Friday, which became a consequence of the recent dismissal of President Donald Trump based on the employment report for July, indicating that hiring had declined.

Trump, without evidence, accused Makentarfir of manipulating data. She held the position of BLS head for a year and six months, and her dismissal has sparked outrage among former colleagues and associations, which emphasized that she operated beyond reproach.

Erica Makentarfir has significant experience in economics, having worked at the Center for Economic Studies at the Census Bureau, the Department of Finance, and the Council of Economic Advisers of the White House. She earned a bachelor's degree in social sciences from Bard College and a doctorate in economics from Virginia Tech.

In 2023, Makentarfir was nominated for the position of BLS head and was confirmed by the Senate in January 2024 with a vote of 86-8. Among the Republicans who supported her were then-Senator J.D. Vance and Senator Marco Rubio.

Former colleagues of Makentarfir, such as William Beach, called her dismissal unprecedented and highlighted the negative implications for the statistical mission of the BLS. They stressed that she always maintained standards of data accuracy.
