Trump Fired Official Representative Over Poor Employment Data

  • Trump fired the BLS commissioner due to poor employment data
  • Economists warn of the risk of losing trust in the data
  • The number of jobs created is increasing in various sectors

President Donald Trump fired Eric McEntaffer, the commissioner of the Bureau of Labor Statistics (BLS), after the publication of employment data that turned out to be worse than expected. In July, only 73,000 jobs were created, significantly below the forecast of 100,000. Additionally, data for April and June were substantially revised down, resulting in a reduction of 258,000 new jobs.

Trump accused McEntaffer in manipulations with data, claiming that they "adjusted" the numbers to hide the truth from him and the Republican Party. This step triggered a backlash among economists and opposition politicians, who emphasized that politicization of economic data could undermine their credibility.

Experts, such as Michael Madovits from the Roosevelt Institute, stressed that the loss of trust in economic statistics is a serious risk for the U.S. economy. They believe that restoring this trust will be much more complicated.

In recent months, there has also been an increase in job creation, particularly in government, technology, and retail sectors. In July, 62,075 jobs were recorded, which is 29% more than in June.

At the same time, Trump continues to promote his policy, which, according to his words, aims to restore the U.S. economy, regardless of the negative indicators that indicate an increase in difficulties in certain sectors, including manufacturing.
