Riley, who received the nickname "Miss Country Soul" for her unique voice, became a pioneer for women in country music, starting her career with her distinctive sound and low hits in the 1960s and 70s. In April 2025, the singer reported that she underwent rehabilitation after several surgical interventions on her spine.

Riley was born in July 1940 in Tishomingo, Oklahoma. Her love for country music began in her childhood when she sang on local radio. After moving to Los Angeles, she signed a contract with Monument Records and recorded her most famous song "Don’t Touch Me," which earned her the first and only Grammy Award in the category of Best Female Country Vocal Performance.
