Marseille signs Brazilian winger Paixão from Feyenoord
- Marseille has signed Paixão for a record deal.
- The player has become the best in the Netherlands in the previous season.
- The team is preparing to start the new season on September 15.
The Ligue 1 football club Marseille has signed Brazilian winger Igor Paixão from Feyenoord. The deal could reach 35 million euros (40.6 million dollars).
25-year-old Paixão scored 18 goals in 47 matches last season and was recognized as the best player of the season in the Netherlands. Marseille beat competition from Premier League newcomer Leeds to secure a contract with him.
The club announced the deal yesterday evening on Friday, not providing additional details, but French media estimated the deal at 30 million euros with an additional 5 million depending on results.
Earlier, Marseille signed a record 32 million euro deal with Portuguese club Braga for striker Vitinha at the beginning of 2023. Vitinha did not manage to adapt and scored only six goals in 43 matches, the first of which was sold to Genoa.
Paixão showcased his skills during the match of the Champions League against AC Milan in February, scoring a goal in a 1-0 win and creating plenty of opportunities for Milan's defense with his speed.
Marseille finished last season in second place in Ligue 1, trailing only Paris Saint-Germain and qualifying for the Champions League.
Coach Marcelino Roberto De Zerbi conducted several transfers this summer, including the return of experienced striker Përa-Emery Obameyang from Al-Khadisiya in Saudi Arabia. The 36-year-old Obameyang scored 21 goals in the last season in Al-Khadisiya, after which he scored 30 goals and became a fan favorite in Marseille during the 2023-24 season.
The team also signed attacking midfielder Angel Gomez from Lille and defensive midfielder Facundo Medina from Lens.
The addition of Obameyang and Paixão adds new attacking strength, which already includes Mason Greenwood, who scored 21 goals in the last season, and Amin Guiri.
Marseille opens the new Ligue 1 season when they travel to the northern coast to face Rennes on September 15.
