Former Colombian President Uribe Receives 12 Years of House Arrest

  • Uribe received 12 years of house arrest for bribery.
  • This is the first case in the history of Colombia where a former president has been sentenced.
  • The case was resolved in the context of a prolonged civil war in the country.

Former Colombian President Álvaro Uribe was sentenced to 12 years of house arrest for bribery and tampering with witnesses in a case related to the prolonged civil war in the country. The court found him guilty of paying in connection with a paramilitary group to have them withdraw testimonies that linked Uribe to radical militant groups.

This ruling was the first instance where a former Colombian president was found guilty in a criminal court. Uribe also received a fine of $578,000 and a ban on holding public office for more than eight years.

The court ordered Uribe to begin serving his sentence immediately at his rural estate in Rionegro, located in the northwestern part of Antioquia. Uribe's attorneys stated that he will appeal the verdict, but the court denied his request to remain free during the appeal, noting that Uribe could flee the country to avoid serving the sentence.

Uribe, who is 73 years old, denies any wrongdoing. After the court session, he stated that "politics prevailed over the law" in the issued verdict.

During the six-month process, prosecutors presented evidence that Uribe and his brother helped establish a paramilitary group "Bloc Metro" in the 1990s. One of the former paramilitary members testified that they were paid for positive testimonies about the former president.

This case has sparked significant resonance in society. Supporters of Uribe consider the case a political vendetta, while human rights advocates view the verdict as an important step towards accountability for past crimes.

The civil war in Colombia began in 1964 when leftist guerrilla groups, such as FARC, took up arms, demanding land reform and social justice. The conflict has resulted in the deaths of approximately 220,000 people and millions displaced.

In 2016, a peace agreement was signed between the government and FARC, officially ending the war, transforming the insurgents into a political party. However, violence in Colombia remains a pressing issue, especially from fragmented armed groups, drug traffickers, and land disputes continue.
