Pitcher Hauk undergoes surgery on the elbow, missing the entire season
- Pitcher Hauk will undergo elbow surgery, which will exclude him from the season.
- Recovery after the surgery may take up to 18 months.
- Red Sox are looking for alternatives to replace Hauk in the team.
Boston Red Sox reported a significant loss in their efforts to remain competitive in the 2025 season. Right-handed pitcher Tanner Hauk will undergo elbow surgery, known as Tommy John surgery, which excludes him from participating in the remainder of the season and likely a significant portion of the 2026 season.
Hauk, who was selected to the All-Star team in 2024, could not maintain the same level of play in 2025 due to a physical discomfort that eventually led to the necessity of surgical intervention. The team's manager Alex Cora confirmed this information, stating that the operation is recommended by a doctor in Texas.
The Tommy John surgery is expected to result in a recovery time ranging from 12 to 18 months, which puts Hauk's participation in the upcoming season under doubt. This significantly decreases the Red Sox's chances of making it to the playoffs, especially in the competitive division where teams like the Yankees, Blue Jays, and Rays compete.
Starting his successful 2024 season, Hauk finished the season with an ERA of 3.12, but in 2025 his statistics dropped to 0-3 with an ERA of 8.04. Hauk's absence will be felt both on the field and beyond, as he was one of the most reliable pitchers on the team.
The Red Sox, in order to compensate for this loss, are considering the possibility of bringing in young talents to the team's roster. Recently, the team signed right-handed pitcher Dustin Maya, who is expected to make his first start for the Red Sox in the coming days.
