In Chile, rescue operations are ongoing to search for five miners who were trapped in the El Teniente mine after a collapse caused by a landslide. The incident occurred on September 2, 2025, when a landslide measuring 4.3 magnitude resulted in the collapse of mine tunnels.
The company Codelco, which manages the mine, confirmed that one miner has died, while five others remain trapped. The body of the victim has been identified, but the identity of the others has not yet been established. Rescue teams are working on clearing the debris to reach the miners who, according to previous data, are located under 20 meters of rubble.
General director of the mine, Andres Muzik, reported that rescuers expect to advance 15-20 meters each day. Operations in the mine are suspended while rescue efforts are ongoing.
Chilean President Gabriel Boric stated that the government is doing everything possible to rescue the miners and is coordinating efforts at the site. The seven trapped miners have received updates about the situation, and their survival chances are increasing with each passing hour.
The agency for emergency situations and the prosecutor's office in Chile have begun an investigation into the cause of the collapse, stating that it was not a result of any previous seismic activity.
