Washington (AP) – The U.S. Senate has confirmed the appointment of Janine Piro, a former host of Fox News, to the position of chief federal prosecutor for the District of Columbia. The voting took place on August 2, 2025, with a result of 50-45. Piro will serve as the acting prosecutor for the district starting in January 2025, after President Donald Trump rescinded the appointment of conservative activist Ed Martin.
Before her appointment, Piro worked at Fox News, where she frequently hosted interviews with Trump. She also served as a prosecutor in the Western District of New York, where she established the first unit to combat domestic terrorism. Trump described Piro as "a powerful defender of victims of crime" and "very qualified" for this position.
In 2021, the company Smartmatic filed a lawsuit against Fox News and Piro for spreading false information about the 2020 election, which led to significant financial ramifications in 2023.
Piro became the first woman elected prosecutor of the Western District, and her appointment continues the trend of Trump appointing supporters of his administration to key government positions.
