China is battling outbreaks of the Chikungunya virus
- In Ukraine, over 7000 cases of the Chikungunya virus have been registered.
- The government has implemented strict measures to control the widespread outbreak.
- Heavy rains are increasing mosquito activity, which transmits the virus.
China is grappling with outbreaks of the Chikungunya virus, forcing authorities to take a series of preventive measures. As of mid-year, over 7000 cases have been reported, predominantly in the city of Foshan in Guangdong province, located near Hong Kong.
The regional government has introduced measures similar to strict restrictions during the COVID-19 pandemic, including mandatory disinfection of streets and control of standing water, as this type of water is where mosquitoes that transmit the virus breed. People who do not clean their yards of standing water may face fines of up to 10,000 yuan (about 1400 US dollars).
Additionally, in Foshan, patients with Chikungunya are required to receive treatment in hospitals or quarantine zones until they obtain a negative test result. The government has also deployed drones to identify areas of mosquito breeding and released fish that eat mosquito larvae in water bodies.
As a result of heavy rains and increased humidity, which have been caused by monsoons, the situation has worsened, as these conditions promote the proliferation of mosquito populations. The government has tightened control measures against the outbreak, as the number of new cases continues to decrease.
The USA has issued a warning about travel to Guangdong province due to outbreaks, as Chikungunya can cause prolonged symptoms, such as high fever and severe joint pain.
