Special Representative of the USA, Steve Vitkoff, arrived in Moscow, where he began negotiations with Russian leaders regarding a possible peace agreement with Ukraine. The meeting takes place ahead of the deadline set by the USA President Donald Trump, which expires on August 8.
Trump previously stated that in the event of a lack of progress in the negotiations, the USA would impose new economic sanctions on Russia, including those on the so-called "shadow fleet" of oil tankers, which are used for transporting oil in circumvention of Western sanctions. These measures could become the first step in a strategic tightening against the Kremlin.
Vitkoff was met in Moscow, where he met with Kirill Dmitriev, the special representative of the Russian president. The Kremlin did not confirm whether a meeting between Vitkoff and President Vladimir Putin would take place. At that time, Trump expressed his disappointment with the Kremlin's position, since previous terms for reaching a peace agreement were ignored.
It remains unclear whether Vitkoff will be able to make progress in the negotiations, as previous attempts to conclude a peace deal have not yielded results. Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky urged international partners to strengthen sanctions against Russia.
