Washington (AP) — Two 15-year-old teenagers were arrested in Washington for attempting to steal a car and assaulting one of the most prominent members of the Department of Effective Government, which prompted President Donald Trump to again call for federal control over the city.

The victim of the attack was Edward Coristine, known under the nickname "Big Yaitsa", who was one of the prominent DOGE workers, created for shortening federal bureaucracy. Coristine was attacked around 3 a.m. in the Logan Circle area, when a group of teenagers attempted to steal his car.

According to police reports, the group approached the car with a couple and made a comment about the theft. Coristine pushed a woman who was with him, in the car for her safety, and returned to protect the group. The teenagers attacked him, while patrol officers did not intervene. When officers arrived, the teenagers fled.

Two 15-year-old teenagers from Maryland were arrested for attempted theft in connection with the car theft without a weapon.

This attack gave rise to new posts from the Republican campaign regarding the escalation of crime in Washington, and Trump threatens to take local power and introduce direct federal control over the city.

In social media and comments in the White House on September 5, Trump described crime in Washington as "getting out of control". He stated: "If Washington does not quickly fix the situation, we will have no choice but to take the city under control and show criminals that they cannot escape punishment."

According to police data, the investigation into the attack on Coristine is ongoing, and additional suspects are being sought. Local officials noted that crime among minors, including car thefts, remains a serious problem.
