Evacuation of three individuals from the American research station in Antarctica

  • The evacuation of three individuals from the American research station in Antarctica took place on September 6, 2025.
  • The operation was conducted under extreme conditions of cold winter and darkness.
  • Medical personnel accompanied the patients during the flight to Christchurch.

On September 6, 2025, New Zealand conducted the evacuation of three individuals from the American research base in Antarctica. The operation was carried out in extreme cold and persistent darkness.

The rescue flight was carried out by the Royal New Zealand Air Force (RNZAF) with medical personnel on board. One of the evacuees required thermal medical assistance, while two others received medical attention during the flight from McMurdo Station to Christchurch.

According to information from the RNZAF, the temperature at the station reached -24 degrees Celsius (-11 Fahrenheit), which complicated the 20-hour mission. The aircraft in the darkness and cold is one of the most challenging conditions for conducting flights.

RNZAF Commander Andy Scott emphasized that the conditions for flying during this period are very challenging due to the changing climate and difficulties with weather forecasting. The only way pilots could orient themselves was by using night vision goggles.

The American ambassador to New Zealand, Melisa Sue, expressed gratitude for the conducted operation, noting that her partners in New Zealand demonstrated a high level of preparedness.
