  • He was learning to shoot, having accused the NFL of failing to address ongoing concussion issues.
  • The mother reported his suicide threat in 2022.

The mother of Shayne Tamura, a man who killed four people in Manhattan on July 28, 2025, reported that he had problems with mental health and the consequences of sports injuries. During a call to 911 in the summer of 2022, she revealed that her son had been suffering from depression, chronic migraines, substance abuse, and the lasting effects of sports-related head injuries, known as chronic traumatic encephalopathy (CTE).

Tamura, who was 27 years old, had a history of mental health issues and had repeatedly turned to doctors. In the recording of the call, he expressed intentions of suicide. The mother noted that her son kept a pistol in his backpack and was using narcotics, trying to cope with emotional problems.

On July 26, 2025, Tamura, working in Las Vegas, traveled to New York, where he took the lives of four people, among whom was a police officer. After the shooting, he inflicted wounds on himself. In the recorded notes, found at the crime scene, he accused the NFL of failing to address the ongoing concussion issues related to head injuries in football players.
