Seoul, South Korea (AP) — Kim Keon-hee, the wife of former South Korean President Yoon Suk-yeol, appeared for questioning in the middle of the week, as investigators expanded their inquiry into allegations of manipulation involving stocks, bribery, and coercion in party nominations.
The investigation into Kim is one of three separate inquiries being conducted by special prosecutors under the new liberal government of Seoul, which is aimed at President Yoon's administration. He was recently dismissed from office amid the ongoing military status in the country.
According to reports, Yoon aimed to seize power on December 3, describing liberals as "anti-state" forces that misuse their majority to disrupt his administration. Some political opponents are questioning whether Yoon's actions were partially motivated by increasing accusations against his allies.
"I am responsible for the public outcry, even though I am an innocent person," Kim told journalists after her questioning. She added that she would cooperate with investigators, but did not respond to specific questions regarding the accusations.
During a critical police operation, dozens of Yoon's supporters gathered outside the office of the special prosecutor in central Seoul, holding banners from the South Korean and U.S. flags.
Yoon, who was reinstated to office last month, is facing a significant judicial process regarding the allegations against him and others. Investigators sought to compel him to provide testimony about his allies, but he refused and claimed that he was in the vicinity of his camera in the vicinity, while they did not deny the execution of the arrest order.
Yoon and Kim are suspected of having links to the fact that they were involved in the conservative party "People Power" for the nomination of a specific candidate in the parliamentary elections of 2022. Kim is also linked to several corruption accusations, including that she received funds through a church that serves as a middleman for clerical services.
When Yoon was in power, he immediately issued orders to suspend the investigation of his allies, calling their actions baseless political attacks. His declaration of military status lasted only a few years, after which lawmakers began to suspend it.
After the presidential elections in early December, the new liberal president Lee Jae-myung approved legislation for conducting deeper investigations, including the case regarding military status and accusations against Kim.
Yoon has been dismissed from office in connection with the investigation following the suspension of the arrest, but again was banned in July due to the risk of destroying evidence.
