Livan develops a plan for limiting arms supplies only to state forces

  • The Livan Cabinet has instructed the army to develop a plan for the disarmament of Hezbollah.
  • The Hezbollah leader denies the possibility of disarmament during Israeli attacks.
  • This government session became the first open discussion regarding Hezbollah's disarmament after the conflict.

In the morning, the Livan Cabinet instructed the ministers to develop a plan, according to which some armed forces of the country will be limited only to state institutions until the end of the year. This decision was made in response to pressure from the United States, which demands the disarmament of the Hezbollah group, which has Iran's support.

The plan is to be presented to the government by the end of September for discussion and approval. Prime Minister Naffaf Salam noted that the government wants only the army and other state forces to have weapons in Livan.

Hezbollah leader Naim Qassem stated that the group will not agree to disarmament while attacks from Israel continue. He emphasized that the issue of disarmament must be resolved taking into account their participation in discussions.

This government session became the first open discussion regarding Hezbollah's disarmament after the conflict with Israel, which occurred in July 2023. It is noted that Hezbollah remains an important political force, but its support among the population is declining, along with the surveys.

In this regard, Livan is also considering proposals from the United States regarding Hezbollah's disarmament, but no agreement has been reached so far. The Livan government is trying to eliminate registration between communities, since Hezbollah has significant support among the Shiite population.
