Russia announced the suspension of the moratorium on medium-range missiles
- Russia has suspended the moratorium on the deployment of medium-range missiles.
- The USA plans to deploy new missiles in Europe.
- Putin announced the deployment of new missiles in Belarus.
Russia has stated that it no longer considers itself obliged to adhere to the self-imposed moratorium on the deployment of medium-range missiles with nuclear capabilities. This decision may lead to a new arms race amid rising tensions between Moscow and Washington through Ukraine.
In a statement, the Russian Ministry of Foreign Affairs indicated that the decision is related to the actions of the USA and their allies, who are developing and planning the deployment of medium-range missiles in Europe and other regions. Specifically, it mentions the USA's plans to deploy Typhoon and Dark Eagle missiles in Germany next year.
The ministry emphasized that such actions create a "destabilizing missile potential" near Russia, which poses "a direct security threat to our country." In connection with this, Russia announced the right to take corresponding measures if necessary.
President Vladimir Putin has already announced the deployment of new Oreshnik missiles on the territory of Belarus by the end of the year. Kremlin spokesperson Dmitry Peskov noted that specific steps will not be announced in advance.
This statement appeared against the backdrop of President Donald Trump's announcement regarding the transfer of two nuclear submarines through provocative statements by Dmitry Medvedev. Trump also expressed concern about threats of war through ultimatums that Russia sends in response to requests for peace negotiations regarding Ukraine.
After the suspension of the Intermediate-Range Nuclear Forces Treaty (INF) in 2019, tensions have increased similar to those during the Cold War. New missiles, such as Oreshnik, can achieve targets in Europe and have the potential to be both conventional and nuclear warheads.
