Two Chinese citizens, Chuan Gen and Shiwei Yan, were arrested in the US for illegal export activities. They are accused of smuggling Nvidia chips worth tens of millions of dollars to China without necessary licenses. According to a statement from the US Department of Justice, their company ALX Solutions, registered in California, executed at least 21 shipments from July 2022 to July 2025.
Documents filed in court confirm that in the first half of 2024, ALX Solutions shipped powerful Nvidia H100 graphics processors, which were improperly designated and had no export licenses. The shipment of these exports originated from Hong Kong and China, including a payment of 1 million dollars from the company to the mainland of China in January 2024.
During the office search of ALX Solutions and phone calls, Gen and Yan were found with "compromising communications" that testify to their intent to smuggle chips to China through Malaysia to circumvent American export restrictions. If they are convicted, they could face up to 20 years of loss of liberty.
Nvidia, commenting on the case, stated that smuggling is impossible, as all sales undergo a retail check in accordance with US export laws.
