- The mascot of the Seattle Kraken team had a meeting with the bear during the photoshoot.
- The photoshoot took place in Katmai, Alaska, to promote youth hockey.
- The incident did not lead to injuries; the bear stopped before making contact.
The NHL team Seattle Kraken organized a promotional photoshoot at the national park Katmai, Alaska. During the photoshoot, which took place on June 25, the team's mascot, named Buoy, and forward John Hayden were close to meeting with the bear. The video, published by the team, shows how the bear approaches them during fishing in a small river.
Hayden, dressed in fishing gear, initially started to catch fish, but his line was quickly snagged. The bear was moving towards the mascot, but at the last moment, it stopped when Hayden, Buoy, and the filming crew returned to the shore. None of the participants were harmed.
The team did not plan to include the bear in the photoshoot, but it became part of the video, which was shared on social media. The organizers ensured safety, noting that bears are common in the area.
The director of marketing for the team, Melissa O'Brochta, noted that the bear was curious about the people, but the mascot likely drew its attention. During the incident, Hayden stated that the bear seemed interested in the appearance of Buoy.
This event became part of a promotional tour organized by the Corporation of Native Peoples of Bristol Bay, aimed at popularizing youth hockey in the region, where they have their own NHL team.
