In 2021, in the city of Pullman, Washington, he became the subject of an investigation due to an incident involving a masked intruder in a residence. This incident occurred less than a year before the murders, in which Kohberger was arrested on November 13, 2022.

According to police documents, a woman who became a witness of the incident reported that an unknown person in a mask attempted to enter her apartment. She fought off the intruder, after which he fled. The report does not indicate whether the arrested suspect was involved in this incident.
