Former Miami Heat security guard sold stolen jerseys

  • Markus Peres is accused of selling stolen sports memorabilia.
  • Nearly 300 jerseys were seized, including a LeBron James jersey.
  • The value of the items stolen is estimated at 2 million dollars.

Former security guard for the Miami Heat team, Markus Tomas Peres, 62, appeared before the court for charges related to the transportation and sale of stolen goods across state lines. In a hearing on September 5, 2025, he made his first appearance in federal court.

Peres worked with the team from 2016 to 2021, and then in the NBA from 2022 to 2025. He had access to a secure room with equipment where valuable items were kept, intended for the future museum of the team. Authorities conducted a search at his home on April 3, 2025, and seized nearly 300 stolen jerseys and other valuable memorabilia.

According to documents, Peres sold over 100 stolen items for a total of nearly 2 million dollars. Particularly noteworthy is the LeBron James jersey, which was sold for approximately 100,000 dollars and later at Sotheby’s auction for 3.7 million dollars. Overall, according to estimates, Peres sold more than 400 jerseys and other items.

The charges against Peres remind of the case of former Augusta National employee Richard Brendon Globensky, who received a prison term for stealing memorabilia worth 5.3 million dollars.
