In Dresden, a city in eastern Germany, tens of thousands of people received notice to leave their homes due to the necessary demolition of a bomb that had remained since World War II. The bomb was discovered during work to clear the ruined bridge.
According to information, nearly 17,000 people were required to leave their homes, including the famous Frauentürm church, which was restored after being destroyed during the war, as well as several hotels.
A section of the Karl bridge, one of the main crossings over the Elbe River, was partially demolished in early January 2024, and all construction must be completed by July. Over the decades since the war, Germany has remained marked by unexploded ordnance, which is often discovered during construction work.
Additionally, in Keln, more than 20,000 people were evacuated from the central part of Keln after three unexploded bombs from World War II were discovered, making it the largest such operation in the city since the war. The bomb found in Dresden was of British manufacture weighing 250 kilograms, according to local authorities' data.
