ATLANTA — Democrat Michael Turmond announced his intention to run for the office of governor of Georgia in 2026. He hopes to become the first Democrat to win this position in 28 years. Turmond, who has significant experience in public affairs, stated that he will fight for the everyday issues that concern residents such as the affordability of products, housing, and access to healthcare.

Turmond, 72, already has in his record three terms in office as a commissioner of labor and was the first Black legislator from his hometown of Athens, elected in 1986. He also served as the chief of Dekalb County, where he left behind $150 million in reserves.

He is joining the Democratic race, where there are already several candidates, including Senator Jason Esteves and former Atlanta Mayor Kasim Reed. Turmond emphasized that his campaign focuses not on the politics of President Donald Trump but on the interests of Georgia residents.

Turmond believes that his experience and abilities will unite various communities to support his strong candidacy. He also noted that it is important to have a candidate who can win elections, especially since this is a key turning point in the election cycle.
