On the morning of September 6, 2025, Russian troops carried out a targeted attack on the gas infrastructure in the Odesa region, which provides various routes for the supply of natural gas in Ukraine. This was reported by the press service of the Ministry of Energy of Ukraine.
The attack damaged the compressor station of the operator GTS of Ukraine, located near the Ukrainian-Russian border. This station is part of the route connecting terminals of natural gas from Greece with Ukrainian gas storage facilities through the Transbalcan gas pipeline, which has already supplied natural gas from the USA and tested supplies of Azerbaijani gas.
According to the Minister of Energy, Vitaly Grinchuk, this attack is a clear signal for all of Europe, which plans to gradually reduce its dependence on Russian natural gas by 2027. The minister emphasized that the Russian Federation will utilize all available resources to eliminate the energy independence of Europeans and alternative routes for gas supply.
As a result of the attack, the main gas pipeline in the Izmail district of the Odesa region was also damaged, which led to the temporary disconnection of 2,500 subscribers.
The Transbalcan gas pipeline connects the markets of natural gas in Southern Europe with Central and Eastern Europe, passing through Greece, Bulgaria, Romania, Moldova, and Ukraine, and also allows for the transportation of gas from Turkey to Hungary, Slovakia, and Poland. As of September 2025, 20% of the capacity of the Transbalcan gas pipeline has already been reserved, while demand in the market is increasing.
