The government calls for support for Morecambe in difficult times
- Sir Keir Starmer called for the rescue of the Morecambe club.
- Bury is offering free tickets for Morecambe fans.
- The EFL has highlighted the importance of an independent regulator for clubs in crisis.
Prime Minister of Great Britain, Sir Keir Starmer, expressed serious concern regarding the situation, in which Morecambe finds itself. He called on everyone connected to the club to "make the right choice" for the rescue of the team.
Morecambe, which last season was relegated from League Two, is currently facing the risk of closure due to financial crisis. The club was suspended from the National League amid lengthy purchase procedures, in which the owner Jason Whittingham and the investment company Panjab Warriors are involved.
Starmer emphasized that it is important for the club not only to survive but also to have the opportunity to thrive. He stressed that the club has great significance for the community and fans.
At the same time, Bury is providing free tickets for Morecambe fans for their first match of the new season "as a gesture of solidarity and football friendship". The Bury club also experienced a crisis in 2019 when it was expelled from the EFL, but eventually was restored.
In addition, the Secretary of State for Culture, Media and Sport, Lisa Nandy, noted that clubs in crisis, such as Morecambe, "absolutely" can be saved. She stated that the new independent football regulator, which will be established this year, will ensure control over clubs' financial affairs.
Nandy called Whittingham to "make the right choice" and sell the club, emphasizing that owners must act to secure their teams.
