On September 6, 2025, President of Russia Vladimir Putin met with American special representative Steve Vitkoff in Moscow. This meeting lasted approximately three hours and, as reported by the Russian state agency TASS, was "constructive and useful."
After the meeting, U.S. Secretary of State Marco Rubio noted that there might be an expansion regarding possible sanctions against Russia. He stated that Vitkoff is returning from Moscow and is hoping for further discussions in the coming days. Rubio added that "there may be positive news, and possibly, there may not be."
According to information from Western ZMI, this meeting could be the last chance for Russia to avoid possible sanctions and tariffs from the U.S., if the Kremlin does not agree to cease fire in Ukraine by August 8. After the meeting, Putin's aide Yuri Ushakov reported that the parties discussed issues related to Russia's war against Ukraine.
