- Müller signed a contract with Vancouver Whitecaps until 2026.
- The team aims to qualify for the MLS playoffs, currently holding second place.
- Müller's transfer could be crucial for the development of young players in the team.
Thomas Müller, a legend of Bayern Munich, completed his transfer to Vancouver Whitecaps, which the team announced on Wednesday. Müller, who has made a record 756 appearances for Bayern, scoring 250 goals, was previously linked with several teams in the USA after confirming his departure from Bundesliga in the spring.
To sign Müller, Vancouver reached an agreement with FC Cincinnati to obtain the rights to the player for a sum of up to $400,000 in total costs. According to MLS rules, as long as another team places a player on their discovery list, no other league team can negotiate with this player.
Despite Cincinnati having exclusive rights to negotiate with Müller, the player accepted the proposal to join the club in the spring. Now Müller joins the Canadian team during the ongoing MLS season with hopes of making a playoff push. The Whitecaps occupy second place in the Western Conference table with 45 points after 24 matches, having a record of 13 wins, 5 losses, and 6 draws.
The team also reached the final of the CONCACAF Champions Cup at the beginning of this year, but lost to Cruz Azul 0:5. Müller left the Bundesliga after winning 13 championship titles and two Champions League trophies with Bayern. He also accumulated 131 appearances for his country, winning the World Cup in 2014, the first to finish an international career last year.
