The Supreme Court of Brazil, led by Alexandre de Moraes, softened the conditions of the house arrest of ex-president Jair Bolsonaro on September 6, 2025. Family members can visit him without prior permission from the court.
This decision was made possible after a request from the federal police. Now the sons, daughter, grandchildren of Bolsonaro, and close relatives of his friends can visit him while he resides in Brazil. Previously, only lawyers had unrestricted access to his residence.
Bolsonaro remains under house arrest due to charges in a case regarding a state coup attempt following the elections of 2022. He denies all charges. The court where de Moraes presides previously ordered Bolsonaro to wear an electronic bracelet and comply with curfew hours. Meanwhile, the ex-president remains prohibited from contacting his son, Eduardo Bolsonaro.
After the court's decision, politicians who support Bolsonaro blocked the work of Congress, demanding the impeachment of the judge and the amnesty for individuals accused in the coup attempt, including under the events of January 8, 2023, when riots occurred in Brazil.
