- The center has received criticism regarding the conditions for the accommodation of migrants.
In the state of Indiana, the opening of a new center for the accommodation of migrants will take place under the name Speedway Slammer. This facility is located approximately 70 miles south of Indianapolis, and it plans to expand to add 1000 new places for accommodation.
This project was initiated by the Ministry of Internal Affairs of the USA, which announced cooperation with the government of Indiana. The Secretary of the Ministry, Kristi Noem, stated that this expansion is necessary for improving the effectiveness of the deportation process. According to her, "those individuals who are residing in the country illegally may end up in Speedway Slammer."
The center, which is located on the territory of a former military base, has a maximum security level and is designed for 3100 people. However, part of the facility is currently not filled due to a lack of staff. Before the opening of Speedway Slammer, the Governor of Indiana, Mike Braun, also confirmed that the state collaborates with federal agencies to support deportations.
This new facility has received criticism due to its comparison to "concentration camps," especially since reports about horrific conditions in other similar centers, such as "Alligator Alcatraz" in Florida, are known. It is reported that there are allegations of inhumane conditions for accommodation, including overcrowded rooms and inadequate hygiene.
Operational costs of the new center, according to estimates, will amount to nearly 450 million dollars in the first year, which significantly increases financial contributions to immigration and border services.
