The convict sentenced to five years for the death of the guard

MEDISON, Wisconsin — An 18-year-old detainee, who admitted his role in the case related to the death of the guard at the Wisconsin juvenile facility, was sentenced to five years in detention.

Ryan Nyblom admitted his guilt in April on two counts of being involved in the violent death of the guard in custody. As part of a plea deal regarding the admission of guilt, the initial charge of homicide with aggravated circumstances was reduced. Additionally, the additional charge of assault in custody was dropped.

Shortly before this, a 49-year-old guard, Kory Pruloks, received several blows from a 16-year-old detainee, fell, and was struck in the head with asphalt in mid-February 2024. He died the next day.

According to prosecutors, the 16-year-old detainee was found guilty because one of the guards, in his opinion, abused his position. He threw a cup at her, which he was given, several times hitting her. After the detainee broke into the door, Pruloks went after him to stop him.

In the indictment, it was noted that the 16-year-old boy hit Pruloks several times, as a result of which he fell to the ground and was struck in the head with asphalt.

Nyblom described the following, noting that he knew about the involvement of the 16-year-old boy and that he wanted to obstruct the guard's condition, but then began to hit her. According to the criminal indictment, about 15 minutes before the start of the fight, Nyblom received additional milk and conditioner from the guards and then handed it to the 16-year-old boy. Nyblom noted that he did not see how the 16-year-old boy was guarding, but observed how he hit Pruloks, which led to his fall.

Nyblom's attorney, Joseph L. Bauer, did not respond to a request for comments after the sentencing in the middle.

Nyblom was sentenced to five years in detention, of which 405 days have already been served. The Lincoln Circuit Court Judge Kail Bayne-Allison upheld the sentencing decision. Nyblom was transferred from the juvenile facility to the Lincoln County jail last year.

Nyblom was transferred to Lincoln Hills for a month before Pruloks' death after being indicted in a violent crime case and persistent behavior, including — these are misdemeanors. In April, he admitted his guilt regarding the mentioned indictments.

Another detainee, who is now 17 years old, is being charged with first-degree homicide with reckless disregard and in two cases of assault in custody. He does not admit his guilt for reasons of mental health, and the court process is scheduled for July.

Although he is accused as an adult, the Associated Press does not name him, as his attorneys may try to transfer the case to juvenile court, where proceedings are confidential.
