Google Launches a New Learning Tool in Gemini
- Google has introduced a new learning tool in Gemini.
- Students can receive a complimentary subscription to Google AI Pro.
- The launch of new tools comes against the backdrop of increasing interest in AI in education.
This is reported by TechCrunch, ZDNet.
With the upcoming new academic year, Google announced the launch of a new tool called Guided Learning within the Gemini platform. This tool functions as an AI tutor, helping users to better understand the material, rather than just providing answers to questions.
The launch follows the introduction of Study Mode for ChatGPT by OpenAI, which is also aimed at developing critical thinking skills in users. Both tools were highlighted against the backdrop of a report indicating that AI chatbots diminish the learning process by providing direct answers to questions.
Guided Learning allows Gemini to break down problems step by step and adapt explanations to the needs of users. The tool utilizes images, diagrams, videos, and interactive tests to help users assess their knowledge, rather than simply providing answers.
Google asserts that this tool helps users understand "why" and "how" concepts work. "Guided Learning is a partner in thinking, assisting you in grasping concepts at each step," stated Maureen Heymans, Google’s vice president of education and lifelong learning.
In addition to the new functionality, Google announced that it is working on enhancing Gemini for educational purposes. Now, Gemini automatically includes images, diagrams, and YouTube videos in responses, which helps to better explain complex topics. Users can also ask Gemini to create a study card for learning and guides based on test results or other educational materials.
Google also announced a complimentary annual subscription to the Google AI Pro plan for students in the USA, Japan, Indonesia, Korea, and Brazil. This plan provides access to expanded capabilities of Gemini 2.5 Pro, NotebookLM, Deep Research, and other tools.
This launch comes against the backdrop of growing interest in AI technology in education, which is supported by the company's investments totaling $1 billion in training and preparing personnel.
