Amazon Launches Zoox Robotaxi Without Steering Wheel and Pedals

  • Zoox has received approval to launch its robotaxi without a steering wheel.
  • The robotaxis will operate in San Francisco and Las Vegas.
  • NHTSA is investigating the self-certification of Zoox.

Zoox, a company that belongs to Amazon, has received approval from U.S. regulators to launch its electric robotaxis, which do not have traditional driving elements such as a steering wheel and pedals. This is a significant step in the development of autonomous transportation, as Zoox prepares to compete with Waymo.

The National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA) has granted Zoox the first exemption in history from the rules requiring the presence of certain driving elements for all vehicles that operate on public roads. Under this exemption, Zoox is required to "select or restrict" statements about the compliance of its robotaxis with federal automotive safety standards.

This decision allows Zoox to launch its robotaxi service later this year, starting in Las Vegas, and then in San Francisco, with plans to expand to other cities in the Bay Area, Austin, Miami, Los Angeles, and Atlanta. Unlike Tesla, Zoox has received permission to conduct paid rides in autonomous vehicles in California.

Zoox's robotaxi features a unique design – it is a bi-directional vehicle that resembles a toaster, lacking traditional driving elements. It is equipped with advanced sensors, including lidar, radar, and cameras. The maximum speed can reach 75 miles per hour, although it typically does not exceed 45 miles per hour in urban areas.

Additionally, Zoox announced plans to begin testing its robotaxis with employees in San Francisco and Las Vegas. However, there is an ongoing open investigation regarding the company’s self-certification, as NHTSA is reviewing whether its vehicles comply with federal safety standards.
