The Impact of Donald Trump's Tariffs on European Pharmaceutical Companies

  • European pharmaceutical companies' stocks have fallen due to Donald Trump's tariff threats regarding imports of drugs.
  • Novo Nordisk warns of possible job cuts due to increasing competition.
  • AstraZeneca announced an investment in the U.S. to boost local production.

European pharmaceutical companies' stocks have dropped to a three-month low due to Donald Trump's tariff threats on drug imports. The STOXX Healthcare index decreased by 1.6% in the middle of April, reaching its lowest level since mid-April.

Trump reiterated his threats to impose significant tariffs on the import of pharmaceutical products to push companies to relocate production to the U.S. He indicated that the initial rate would be a modest one, but in the future, it could increase to between 150% and 250%.

Drugs imported from the EU will be subject to a 15% tariff under the trade agreement between the U.S. and the EU. This has sparked protests in the European pharmaceutical industry, which believes such measures are detrimental to patients on both sides of the Atlantic.

Bayer, which produces well-known medications, reported significant losses, with its stock falling by 4.9%. Another European company, Novo Nordisk, also reported a decline after announcing an increase in sales of its diabetes medications, including Ozempic.

Additionally, a contributing factor that impacted the market was the lowered sales forecast and revenue projections for Novo Nordisk, which resulted in a decrease of its market value by $95 billion. The company warned of possible job cuts due to increasing competition in the market.

AstraZeneca announced an investment of $50 billion in the U.S., aiming to expand its production in the local market. According to the company's CEO, the U.S. spends 0.8% of GDP on pharmaceutical innovation, surpassing the indicators of Europe and the United Kingdom.
