In Hyattsville, Maryland, this week, a man was arrested, who is accused of murdering police officer Denna Frederick Kemble nearly 30 years ago. Amir Jalil Ali, 62, was arrested in connection with the first-degree murder charge. He was the live-in partner of Kemble, who worked in the Metropolitan Police of Washington and was killed on February 16, 1995, in her apartment in Silver Spring.
According to police data, Ali initially was accused of the murder of the victim. However, no evidence of the murder was found, and it is believed that Kemble was killed with her own weapon, which was not recovered.
Kemble, who served in the police for four years, received five commendations. Her colleagues reported that she was afraid of Ali and had fallen asleep with her gun under her pillow. According to one of her colleagues, Kemble planned to leave him, and if she did not show up for work, it would indicate that he had killed her.
Ali, also known by the name Kenneth Bernell Wonsom, changed his name in 2021. After the arrest, he remained in custody, awaiting charges related to the murder.
Detectives say that, according to DNA evidence, Ali was present during the conflict with Kemble. It is known that her father expressed concern about Ali's arrest, calling it "long overdue" resolution.
