Sunderland signed 19-year-old Chelsea forward Mark Ghiu on loan for the 2025-26 season.
Ghiu, who transferred to Chelsea for £5 million from Barcelona in July 2024, scored six goals in 16 matches last season. He stated that he considers this opportunity important for the development of his career, hoping to help Sunderland achieve success in the Premier League.
Sunderland received promotion after winning the playoff final against Sheffield United in May.
Ghiu became the ninth signing of the club this summer. He came through the renowned La Masia academy in Barcelona and scored on his debut within 33 seconds. After moving to England, he scored three goals in the match against Shemrok Rovers in the Conference League, becoming the second youngest player for Chelsea to score a hat-trick.
The sporting director of Sunderland, Kristian Spikman, noted that acquiring Ghiu was possible due to Chelsea's trust and the player's desire to join the club. The competition for his signing was significant.
Ghiu is part of the new attacking squad of Sunderland, which also includes several other newcomers this summer.
