Trump threatens to federalize Washington due to attack on employee

  • Trump threatens to seize local governance in Washington
  • Edward Coristine was killed while attempting to rescue a woman
  • Two teenagers detained in connection with the attack

Donald Trump has announced his intention to strip Washington of local self-governance and subordinate the city to federal control. This came after the attack on 19-year-old Edward Coristine, who worked in the so-called "Department of Government Efficiency" (DOGE). Trump accused local authorities of rising crime among youth, particularly for failing to prevent minors from committing crimes, such as drug dealing.

The incident that drew Trump's attention occurred on Sunday night, when Coristine was trying to rescue a woman from an attack by a group of young people. According to Elon Musk, one of his employees sustained serious injuries and was hospitalized with stab wounds.

Police detained two teenagers in connection with the attack, which took place near Dupont Circle. According to police data, Coristine and his girlfriend became victims while attempting to intervene in a carjacking.

Trump, in his post on social media, shared an image of Coristine with injuries, stating that "crime in Washington is absolutely uncontrolled". He emphasized that the situation will not change, he will continue to push for federal intervention in local governance.

Washington, home to nearly 700,000 residents, has seen a 26% reduction in crime rates among its population in the first half of 2025 compared to the previous year. However, Trump continues to call for greater measures against youth who commit crimes.

The office of Washington Mayor Muriel Bowser declined to comment on the situation.
