Brazil Reacts to Trump's Tariffs, Developing Cooperation with China
- Brazil has submitted a request to the WTO regarding the US tariffs.
- China is opening its market for Brazilian coffee.
- Trump's tariffs are connected to the situation of former President Bolsonaro.
Brazil has submitted a request for consultation to the World Trade Organization (WTO) due to the introduction of 50% tariffs by the US on many Brazilian goods. This decision was made by President Luiz Inácio Lula da Silva, as these tariffs are set to take effect on September 6, 2025.
According to estimates from the Brazilian government, 35.9% of products exported to the US fall under these tariffs, which will account for approximately 4% of Brazil's total exports. Brazil believes that the process of resolving this issue in the WTO may take time, and there is no guarantee of success.
Trump associated the introduction of tariffs with the situation of former Brazilian President Jair Bolsonaro, who is currently under domestic investigation. Trump accused Brazil of serious human rights violations related to the persecution of Bolsonaro.
At the same time, China is trying to take advantage of the situation by opening its market for Brazilian coffee, one of the most significant products. The Chinese embassy in Brazil announced that 183 new Brazilian companies received permission to export coffee to China for five years. They emphasized the increasing consumption of coffee in China.
China also expressed its readiness to deepen cooperation with Brazil, which could change the situation in international trade and promote the development of new strategic relations.
